Twice if I’m to be completely honest—though she died only one time. And since honesty is one of the things I promised her as she lay on her death bed, I reckon honest I must be.” With this shocking first statement, Kit Donovan will worm her way into your heart and stay there until long after her story is finished. A Nevada mining town in 1905 is barely fit for a grown man, much less a thirteen-year-old girl on her own, but Kit navigates her situation with bravery, humor, and her own kind of grace. The Tragically True Adventures of Kit Donovan is a brilliant middle grade debut by Patricia Bailey. Visit her at her website http://patriciabaileyauthor.com/ and purchase this fabulous book at Amazon https://www.amazon.com/Tragically-True-Adventures-Kit-Donovan/ or from your local book store. You all the reasons. Less is more. A picture is worth a thousand words. Trust your readers to understand your meaning. You need a lower word count. But when it comes to your own manuscript, it isn’t always easy to see the benefit of cutting those beautiful sentences. It’s often hard to explain why simple is best, but a scene in a TV show I was only half-watching did it amazingly well. During Agents of Shield I was diligently building my agent list, when I noticed a scene where a middle-aged man saying something about the power of words, and a short sentence could be life changing. The young woman was skeptical, so he gave a few examples. I love you. Let’s get married. We’re having a baby. The last sentence was the shortest, but possibly had the most impact. She’s gone. As an author, one might want to compulsively describe every feeling and action that would go along with that statement. But it would be a waste to hide the words that have the most impact when standing alone. Whether you need a shorter novel or tighter sentences, there’s plenty of good advice on the subject. I'd also love to hear about blogs that occasionally host writing contests or other opportunities as I hope to post a monthly list. You spend all of your time writing your novel and thinking about your characters. You struggle to make everything exactly perfect—only to end up questioning everything. Don’t you wish you had a map? Or a secret signal to tell you which door to choose? Or that you could ask professionals exactly what they think and why? Well, some of the pros are willing to help. Yes, I’m talking about agents. Many agents blog to help authors find the answers they’re looking for. They love books as much as we do, and they want you to have the very best tools to get your wonderful books into their hands. I’ve compiled a list of agent blogs I’ve found to be helpful. Some of them no longer add new posts, but the archives are packed full of important information. These blogs have different things that make them great, so be sure to study the archives. http://www.mariavicente.com/blog-posts/ http://jetreidliterary.blogspot.com/ http://queryshark.blogspot.com/ http://confessionsofawanderingheart.blogspot.com/ http://ktliterary.com/daphne/ https://shannonepowers.wordpress.com/author/shannonepowers/ http://nelsonagency.com/pub-rants/ http://www.rachellegardner.com/ http://blog.nathanbransford.com/ (former agent) What are you waiting for? The celebration’s over! Get your research done, and get to work perfecting those manuscripts and queries! Oh… and if you know of other great agent websites I’ve missed, please share them with the rest of the class in the comments below.
Butterfly Bones by Rebecca Carpenter Genre: Young Adult Sci-fi 5 stars Bethany shouldn’t have lived to see her first birthday, but her scientist dad’s determination and the butterfly serum saved her. Now she’s fifteen, but thanks to her disease, she has the figure of a ten-year-old and less strength than the butterflies she depends on to survive. The guy she loves thinks of her like a sister, and a cruel twist of fate makes her the target of the school’s new queen bee. When mice in Dad’s lab begin having strange side effects, Bethany discovers her treatment hasn’t been as well tested as she originally believed. Is she no more than a science experiment to her own dad? As her own side effects grow stronger, Dad proves his love by giving her an irreplaceable gift. Continuing treatment means Bethany will have to go through a change no human has ever faced, but to stop means certain death. Butterfly Bones is a story of love, loss, and miracles which had me riveted from the first page! |
